It is easy to forget that the mere fact of existence is a gift. It is special, mysterious, and amazing.
For me until the early 1970s there was nothing. Zip. Zero. Nadda. Not even darkness. Just nothing.
The universe did not exist.
But then it started to come into view. Piece by piece my consciousness began to record the universe the best it could. This recording, these memories, are what make up my life. My existence.
There will come a day that I will not exist.
Life as we know it is finite. There are countless thoughts, ideas, and beliefs on what happens after this life but death is certain.
So this existence, this experience is a gift. The good and the bad of it. The joy and the suffering. All of it is a gift.
None of us can be certain as to why we are experiencing this thing called life when we are. But we are and that is what is important to remember.
This is our time.
This is your time.
This is my time.
It is unique. There has never been a time like this and there never will be again. It is special. It is precious. It is the most priceless thing possible.
All this is easy to forget. To doubt. To not believe.
So so easy to let the days fall away. One after the other – as if we will never run out of days.
It can seem so difficult to wake up in the morning filled with gratitude for the mere fact of existing. Yet that is what we should do.
In fact we should be thankful for every breathe we have.
I write these words to try and remind myself of this. That I might experience this existence as the precious gift that it is.
Not to be taken for granted. Not to be wasted.
It is a strange thing to be alive and while I am I want to make the most of the experience.
