What is WordPress?
WordPress is both a blog service and an open source software for publishing websites and blogs. WordPress.com is where you can find the service and WordPress.org is where you can find the free software. The two different forms of WP can be confusing for new users so I’ve made this brief video to explain the basic differences.
I believe the WordPress software (.org) is a solid solution for a business owner who needs to be in control of his or her website.
- The software is free.
- Under constant development.
- Very flexible.
- Limitless options.
- Easy to get started with and learn.
- Professional websites can be created without using any code.
- Huge and growing community of users available for support.
For just the cost of a domain name and web hosting an entrepreneur can use the WP software to quickly build a professional web presence.
A little history.
We can go as far back as 2001 and find the roots of WP in b2/cafelog an early blogging platform. But it wasn’t until 2003 that Matt Mullenweg and Mike Little brought WordPress to life. Mr. Mullenweg is still one of the lead developers on the project and has the title of “Head of Bug Creation.”
Since the project launch there have been 14 version releases with the latest being 3.1 and as I write this that version has been downloaded over 4 million times. (latest number)
The WP trademark and all related trademarks are protected by The WordPress Foundation. A 501(c)3 organization founded by Matt Mullenweg to further the mission of the WP open source project: to democratize publishing through Open Source, GPL software.
I heart WP.
Because I believe that WordPress is one of the best tools a business has when it comes to marketing themselves online you are going to be hearing a lot about it from me on this site. It is the very foundation of a sound internet marketing plan as it forms the infrastructure for your online headquarters.
